Born into a fishing family and formally trained in aquaculture, I began my career operating my own shrimp farm before moving into quality assurance and auditing for large-scale aquaculture operations. I later focused on community-driven initiatives—introducing microfinancing for fisheries in the Solomon Islands and leading sustainable coconut production projects. Now based in Australia, I bring over 15 years of experience across aquaculture production, food industry quality assurance, and sustainability leadership, with strong managerial skills in overseeing compliance, certifications, and team operations. I have worked extensively with international standards including ASC, MSC, BAP, ISO, HACCP, and Rainforest Alliance. My work bridges traditional knowledge with modern practices, from farm-level operations to global compliance systems. I currently lead SUNCOB (Sustainable Nature Community Business), providing sustainable seafood solutions through community empowerment, eco-friendly practices, and responsible sourcing—advancing food systems that benefit both people and the planet.

Soni Maria

My passion for sustainable food systems fuels my dedication to tackling the pressing global issues of food loss and waste. As part of my PhD research, I investigate how environmental changes influence fish behavior and seafood quality, placing a particular focus on the problematic mushy tuna syndrome, which severely deteriorates tuna flesh quality and contributes to considerable wastage in the canning industry. Through this research, I have gained valuable insights into the interconnectedness of environmental factors, fish behavior, and supply chain dynamics, all of which play crucial roles in determining the sustainability and quality of seafood. I am acutely aware of the vital importance of fisheries in ensuring a sustainable future, and I am committed to finding solutions that address these challenges effectively. My work aims to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible seafood industry, ultimately benefitting both consumers and the environment.
